How AI Visibility Differs From a Google Ranking
A Google ranking tells you where a page sits in a list of links. AI visibility tells you whether your brand is named in the answer at all, because an AI engine usually gives one written answer that names a handful of brands.
| Google ranking | AI search visibility | |
|---|---|---|
| What is measured | A page's position for a keyword | Whether, where and how a brand is named in an answer |
| Unit | A URL | A brand |
| Same query, same result? | Mostly stable from one check to the next | Can change from one run to the next, so it is read as a trend |
| Where the buyer stops | Usually clicks through to a site | Often reads the answer and never clicks |
The Four Numbers That Measure AI Visibility
EvidentlyAEO reports AI visibility as four numbers: Brand Presence, Visibility Score, Share of Answer and Sentiment Score. Each answers a different question, so a brand can be strong on one and weak on another.
| Metric | The question it answers | How it is calculated | Scale |
|---|---|---|---|
| Brand Presence | Do AI answers mention us at all? | Answers that mention your brand ÷ all tracked answers × 100 | 0–100% |
| Visibility Score | How prominently are we mentioned? | A score that weighs how often you are mentioned, how early in the answer, and the context around the mention | 0–100 |
| Share of Answer | How much of the conversation is ours versus competitors'? | Your brand's mentions ÷ mentions of every tracked brand × 100 | 0–100% |
| Sentiment Score | Is what AI says about us positive? | The tone of the answers that mention you, scored per mention and averaged | 0–100 |
Worked example. Across 100 tracked prompts, your brand is mentioned 30 times and three competitors are mentioned 20, 25 and 25 times. Your Share of Answer is 30 ÷ (30 + 20 + 25 + 25) = 30%. More detail is in What Is Share of Answer?
How AI Visibility Is Measured
AI visibility is measured by asking AI engines the same questions on a schedule and recording what they say. Five steps make the numbers trustworthy:
- Choose a fixed prompt set. Mix category questions, comparisons, buying questions and problems your product solves.
- Choose the engines. EvidentlyAEO tracks 7: ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google Gemini, Claude, Google AI Overviews, Microsoft Copilot, and Grok.
- Run on a schedule. Answers vary between runs, so one check proves little. Repeated runs show the real direction.
- Record more than mentions. Note where each brand appears in the answer, which sources are cited, and the tone used.
- Keep the competitor set fixed. Share of Answer is relative, so adding or dropping competitors mid-way breaks the trend.
You can do this by hand for a few prompts; see how to check if ChatGPT mentions your brand.
Reading the Numbers: An Example
The table shows sample data from the EvidentlyAEO product tour (a demo account tracking running shoes, last 7 days). It is illustrative, not a customer result.
| Brand | Brand Presence | Visibility Score | Share of Answer | Sentiment |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Nike (tracked brand) | 78.6% | 25 | 46.4% | 82.2 |
| Adidas | 45.0% | 13 | 13.8% | 80.2 |
| ASICS | 41.2% | 14 | 22.1% | 82.1 |
| Under Armour | 27.5% | 8 | 11.0% | 79.3 |
- Nike is named in 78.6% of answers and holds 46.4% of all brand mentions, so it leads on both presence and share.
- Its Visibility Score is 25 out of 100. A high presence with a modest score usually means the brand is named often but is not always the first or main recommendation.
- Adidas appears in more answers than ASICS (45.0% vs 41.2%) but has a smaller Share of Answer (13.8% vs 22.1%). Presence and share answer different questions, which is why both are tracked.
What Changes AI Visibility
Three things move AI visibility: whether engines can read your pages, whether other trusted sites describe you consistently, and whether your pages answer buyers' questions directly. The practical checks for each are in What Is Answer Engine Optimization?
If your numbers fall, start with why AI visibility drops and why ChatGPT recommends a competitor instead of you.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is AI search visibility the same as share of voice?
Not quite. Share of Answer is the AI-search version of share of voice: your share of all brand mentions in AI answers. AI search visibility is the wider picture, which also covers whether you are mentioned at all, how prominently, and what is said about you.
How many prompts do I need to measure AI visibility?
Enough to cover the questions your buyers actually ask: category questions, comparisons, buying questions and problems your product solves. Keep the wording identical from one run to the next. Changing the prompts changes the numbers, which makes trends meaningless.
How often should AI visibility be measured?
Often enough to separate a real change from normal variation, because the same prompt can produce a different answer each time. Data refreshes daily on Launch and Growth, up to 4×/day on Scale, and on a custom schedule for Enterprise.
Can I check my AI visibility manually?
Yes, for a small number of prompts. Run each prompt in a fresh conversation, note the engine and model, and record which brands are named and which sources are cited. Manual checks become unreliable once you track more than a few dozen prompts across several engines.
Which AI engines should I measure?
Start with the engines your buyers use, then widen. EvidentlyAEO tracks 7: ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google Gemini, Claude, Google AI Overviews, Microsoft Copilot, and Grok. Results on one engine do not predict results on another.
